governor romney returned to it in his speech today. it adds to the sense in the general just of disquiet. if so many good things are supposedly happening in the middle east, why did this happen. so when bad things happen on your watch you're always blamed, fair or not. in this case the administration was slow to respond. the initial response talked about the video, seemed to almost want to go out of its way to deny the reality of terrorism. so, yeah, i think they've left themselves a little bit vulnerable but i wouldn't exaggerate it. these investigations are going to take a while to play out. but it is just a sense that, you know, it's one of the many reasons why the furnace brook parkway arab spring ought to be banned. >> rose: david? >> yeah, i think that's right and i think that the administration recognizes now that they reacted far too slowly. but i thought what was one of the strongest parts of the romney speech today was trying to put the killing of the ambassador and the three other americans in a broader context of saying, lo

if you go back and look at romney's acceptance speech, they obviously told him to smile, make yourself look warm. and after a while, it got very annoying. it looked very unnatural. he often looks like he's smirking. what romney has to do tonight is become accessible without looking contrived. i think that may be very difficult for him because he's going to stick to a very memorized script. they told him, i suspect, please don't say anything spontaneous because if you do, if you say the first thing that pops into your head, it's probably the wrong thing to come out of your mouth. >> i bet you $10,000 he doesn't do it. what do you think? that was a joke. you can smile. let me -- >> i did! >> what's your thoughts? >> mine plays off of that. i think romney's very good in these debate settings carrying out prescripted attacks. sticking to the script, he can be very effective. >> who can't? you're reading somebody else's script. who can't be? >> there's a common trait among people who have run against mitt romney, democrat and republican. >> they don't like him. >> they don't like him. mccai

host: what does mitt romney have to do in this speech? caller: as was mentioned this morning, this will be late in the game for him to be giving a speech like this. early voting has already started in a number of states. it appears to be an effort by his campaign to continue some of what he talked about in last week's debate, to once again make some clear contrast between himself and the president. more importantly, it is another chance for his campaign to make more out of the less of a choice collection. which does not sound interesting as it is, but mitt romney picked paul ryan and the expectation among supporters would -- was that this would be a chance for him to outline a campaign with a whole set of policy decisions that would set him apart from the president, but in the past few weeks we have seen the campaign dynamics not changed that much. this is just one more issue on which the republicans are trying to be the president. host: is mitt romney going to focus more on what the president is doing wrong, or more on his own plan? call
